IDEA FOR A NEW BOOK CLUB SEGMENT

Archimedes here.  I'm giving Baron a week off of blogging duty to rest his charming wit.  Never fear, though, he'll be back next week.

We are less than three weeks away from book club, so it's crunch time for those of us who don't read a book a day.  We can't all be Indy, after all. ;)  I've really got my fingers crossed that the rarely sighted Squid will show up for his inaugural meeting.  I'm about halfway through ROAD TO WELLVILLE, and I have to admit that it has taken a little bit for me to get into it.  Baron is about a quarter of the way through, and I get the impression that he isn't very impressed so far.

For each meeting we've had, I've tried to get us to go with a theme for our snacks and drinks,  but so far it hasn't really panned out.  (Probably for the best with ONE SECOND AFTER, since we didn't want to eat our pets!!)  However, for this book I have three possible ideas for snack themes: 1) everyone could bring a cereal centered snack (i.e. chex mix, rice krispy treats, etc.), or 2) we could go vegetarian with the snacks to honor the Battle Creek way of life, or 3) we could go to the opposite extreme and have anti-healthy foods (I have an awesome steak crostini recipe I've been wanting to try!).  What do you guys think?  Too involved?  Let me know in the comments!

Finally, the main feature of this blog post: an idea I had for an added segment to our book meetings.  It's call BBB - which stands for Bean's Bonus Book.  The idea came to me after Indy's post about all the extra books she's been reading.  My first thought was: I am so jealous!!  Then, it occurred to me that other fast readers in our group (such as Deuce, JB, and Cat) are probably reading books between meetings.  This thought collided with another thought that has been sitting idly in my mind: Bean has expressed interest in being in the book club, but so far none of our books have interested him.  He is a voracious reader of children's/young adult fiction.  Boom!  My idea was born.  Each month, in addition to the regular book club book, there could be a bonus book selected by Bean.  It would basically be whatever he is reading at the moment or plans to read, but then he can host a mini discussion for that book at the meeting, either before or after the main book.  It would just be an abbreviated version of our normal club discussion, but he could decide how he wanted to conduct it.

What do you guys think?  It may be that the fast-readers would prefer to use their extra reading time to read books of their own choosing, especially once the weather gets warmer.  If that is the consensus, then we can scrap the idea.  It was just one of those random ideas that came to me, so I thought I'd throw it out there...

If anyone is interested,  Bean recently finished THE MAZE RUNNER, which was recently made into a movie.

It looks pretty interesting, so I'm going to try to read it if I can finish ROAD TO WELLVILLE in time.  Hope everyone is staying safe and warm in this winter weather!!  (I bet JB and Cat are wishing they were still in the Caribbean...)  Until next time, Novel Spirits!

  1. I am slow to post and Archimedes beat me to it about the BBB. My bad! I like the idea of a mini book session with Bean. It will be interesting to have his take on books. This inclimate weather is very good for book readers since there is little else to do, unless you need to go to the library! As to the thoughts on the menu for book club, I for one, am not a fan of Kellogg's approach to food. It did not change my mind about a good steak!! The cereal idea was great! I am about at 40% on Road to Wellville and characters are starting to come together. I am looking forward to our next meeting and enjoy all the post! I also hope to a t-shirt for everyone to see at our next meeting before I place an order.

    1. I can't wait to see Baron's art on the t-shirt! I have to agree that the food at Battle Creek does NOT sound appetizing, but I bet we could find more appetizing vegetarian recipes. Of course, we'll already be violating his regimen by consuming "intoxicating" beverages. :)

  2. Hello Cat here. I like ALL the food ideas for our next meeting. Archimedes variety of snack choices reminds me of the annual Rose Parade in which the variety of floats are based on an annual theme.
I agree whole-heartedly with a Bean Segment! I've been wanting to read Maze Runner myself, and I've enjoyed reading the Twilight and Hunger Games series.

    1. Have you seen the MAZE RUNNER movie? I want to wait until after I've read it to watch it, but I think it is out on DVD now. There is a ROAD TO WELLVILLE movie with Matthew Broderick and Anthony Hopkins and several other stars in it that we will have to track down after we finish the book.

  3. I am definitely on board for reading a book we can discuss with Bean. I think anything we do to encourage young readers is great. I should be able to get Maze Runner read before the next meeting. I agree with Cat on the food. Maybe we could incorporate all the food ideas for the next meeting. A veggie tray, an in your face meat choice and rice crispies treats for dessert! Poor Dr. Kellogg had some good ideas for healthy eating but for all the wrong reasons. I stress the "some" - not all!

    1. I like your idea about doing all three! I think that is the perfect solution. And Baron is strongly in favor of rice krispy treats for dessert. As long as I don't have to find out what "protose" tastes like... :)

  4. I am all for Rice Crispy treats definitely! Veggie tray doesn't sound quite as exciting but I understand we must do it in honor of the great Dr. Kellogg. I also feel like we can mirror the "Sears magic cure to opiates" treatment as well. And by that I mean more beer and wine. But that goes without saying. Also, Archie (Archimedes takes so long to write) made me think of an idea when she called out Squid on her post. I would like to submit a request that we change his name to Waldo. As in "Where's Waldo?" since at this point he is almost like an unwritten legend. Does he exist? No one knows. He is impossible to find. Hence, Where's Waldo?

  5. I do think Waldo is perfect for our phantom member!

  6. I am open to food ideas. We haven't received book yet; hopefully tomorrow so I can read during ridiculously cold temps ⛄️!
I think it is great that Bean wants to join us 📚. The Waldo moniker is perfect for Squid. And yes the caribbean is calling⛵️☀️🍹🏄
